I signed up for Hyrox. Is this my midlife crisis?
Why I'm committing to building strength and taking on a new challenge.
According to The Atlantic, running a marathon is the new quarter life crisis. It cites the growing number of 20-somethings running marathons as its evidence.
“In 2019, only 15 percent of people who finished the New York City Marathon were in their 20s. By 2023, that share had grown to 19 percent.”
A similar trend is observed at other marathons. It might be a growing trend but it’s not a new one. I ran my own first marathon when I was 28 after taking up running and sending my life on a very different path. If that was my quarter life crisis, then what happened in my 30s would probably be my third-life crisis - I learnt to swim, took up triathlon and eventually completed an iron distance tri.
Im 42 now and I’ve just signed up for a Hyrox. Is this an actual midlife crisis? Or does it make complete sense?

It kept popping up in my Instagram timeline with increasing frequency and, because it involves an element of running, I wrote a piece for Women’s Running ‘What is Hyrox and is it good for runners?’ for other who were wondering what it was all about.
