This is a very self indulgent post about my training, but I share it as an example if why I bang on a lot about why you need to get really clear on your goals.
Back in April, after the Boston UK marathon didn’t exactly go to plan, my partner suggested I try an autumn marathon. I didn’t want to marathon train through the summer holidays and heat, but there was one race that I thought could work. Valencia Marathon is the first weekend in December and since I would be training for an October half marathon anyway, I could roll this into a December marathon. But the race was full so that plan didn’t happen.
You know what happened next: I signed up for HYROX. My training for this involved going to circuits once a week and doing some weight training. The instructor had been recommended to me and I messaged her on Instagram before going along.
It’s fair to say I was a bit nervous about going along. HYROX seems to have attracted a lot of people who have done CrossFit and the gym where I was headed was a previous CrossFit ‘box’. I’d always found the language of CrossFit quite off-putting and almost intimidating - there are so many abbreviations and nicknames for things that it can make you feel like an outsider who doesn’t know what you’re doing. But I put on my big girl pants and went along to the class.
