Last week I was presented a trophy as the female winner of my running club’s Club Championship. The competition spans the year from April to March with runners accumulating points for their finish position in various races throughout the year. After a couple of races last year, I found myself in first place and from then on it had been my goal to win it. It feels a bit uncomfortable to admit that, because women aren’t supposed to be seen to be competitive, especially not with each other at an amateur level.
At the elite end of a race, we expect competition and to see runners do all they can to win. But for the rest of us, where our finish position doesn’t determine our livelihood for the next few months, we’re supposed to be only in competition with ourselves.
