How to write a race plan
Don't leave your race goals to chance - put pen to paper and make them happen.
It always surprises me how many runners go into races (whether training races or big goal races) without a clear vision of what they want to happen and how they’re going to go about it. After weeks and months of training, you can’t let the outcome be decided by fate.
While it’s true that the hay is in the barn (or not), there are still a lot of things that need to happen on race day for you to get the result that you want. Giving yourself the best chance of the stars aligning for your race to go well takes planning and decision making. Committing these plans to paper (or the notes app on your phone etc) is a good way to get clear on them. Because we all know that we’re more likely to actually do the things that we write down.
So before you go into your next race, take some time to get clear on what outcomes you want to achieve and what steps you’re going to take to get there. This all applies whether you’re aiming for a PB or planning to take it easy - reigning it in when you’re feeling good takes planning too.
