How to write your own training plan for running
Between races or when you can't find a training plan that works for you, here's how to write your own.
When I first started running, I would look up plans, print them off, try to follow them but never 100% successfully. I’d always be skipping runs, adapting or adding sessions, and moving things around. No plan was ever quite perfect, so before long I was creating my own.
Part of my desire to train as a coach was to develop the skills and knowledge to write bespoke training plans, because I knew from experience that off the shelf plans are limiting for runners. Nobody’s training cycle goes to plan without any hiccups, there’s always some adjustment that’s needed.
Not everyone can employ a running coach to plan their training for them. But there are times when it might be useful to write your own training plan. When you’re between set training plans and you need to maintain some consistency to your running, or when you don’t have a race goal but still want to develop your fitness - because most plans you’ll find out there are phased towards a race.
