If you’re doing interval sessions as part of your training (or even if you’re thinking about them but unsure about various aspects) there’s a good chance you’re not giving enough attention to the recovery aspect of your session.

What are recoveries?

Recoveries are the bits between the faster bits. Sometimes this will be a walk or a jog, or even an easy pace. As much as possible, I’d encourage you not to stand still during your recoveries, as much as you want to for several reasons. Firstly, you’ll accumulate more distance during the session overall even if you’re walking your recovery so it makes better use of the time than standing still. Secondly, it will keep your heart rate up a bit so you don’t experience the big peaks and troughs of running fast then standing still. One benefit of this is that it will make it feel easier to go into your next effort.

Some runners also tell me during session that they find it mentally easier to start the next effort if they’ve kept moving even slowly during the recovery.
