For some of us, the resistance machines in the gym are mildly terrifying or majorly intimidating contraptions that we avoid. For others, they are regular part of their training. They can be useful for gym goers of all levels - they offer beginners guidance in their movements and for those at a more advanced level, they provide a safer way to push their limits. If you’ve not used them before or have no idea what I’m taking about, here’s what you need to know about resistance machines.
What are resistance machines?
Resistance machines are designed to provide a controlled, guided form of resistance to help you build strength and muscle. Unlike free weights such as dumbbells or barbells which require you to control the weight throughout a movement, resistance machines use a system of pulleys, cables, or hydraulic cylinders to provide resistance while you perform an exercise.
Why use resistance machines?
They’re a useful training tool, especially for those who are new to strength training, those wanting to focus on specific muscle groups, or those looking for a controlled, safe workout. The machine helps you maintain proper form and limits the range of motion, preventing any awkward or unsafe movements. This can be particularly helpful for beginners.
For example, the leg press works your lower body muscles in a similar way as a weighted squat, but using the leg press you’re sitting down so you don’t need to worry about balance or dropping the weight. This can be particularly handy when working at the upper limit of your capacity.
